Enjoying Your Work

Hello and welcome back to my weekly thoughts!


Today I want to talk about the importance of making work approachable for yourself



Deep down I truly believe most people want to better themselves, to find actual self improvement, to take real palpable steps towards a goal. The problem is, most of the time this is not very fun.


But in more recent times I've discovered a way to make this easier on myself, trying to make it fun or, at the very least, not horrible. Often this means easing into an activity or goal, starting with the smallest possible or comfortable step.


The most important part of this strategy is that you do something every day, the goal being to steadily increase the amount of something that you're doing. Of course it's kind of tiring to do this, so that's exactly why you don't push yourself too hard any individual day, and instead make progress over a large period of time.


The idea is that if you were to overload yourself with this activity, say, once a week, then you would find it incredibly unenjoyable and you would dread that part of the week. Where as if you do a managable amount every day, then you get generally the same amount done, perhaps a little (or even a lot) less while not hating what you're doing.


For me this works really well because if I hate doing something then I will usually end up quitting it within the year, if not sooner. Of course this might not work for everyone as it requires you to commit to this action every day. Some might even find the opposite, working hard one day, more attractive. Which is completely understandable, this is just what works for me with my brain.


Unfortunately I've also found this doesn't usually work for bigger responsibilities, like a job or school. But it does help you clean up your life one step at a time, and even make it enjoyable along the way!
